Every 79 seconds a thief steals someone’s identity;* don’t let
that be yours.
Identity theft is an increasing
and serious crime. As your financial institution, we take the time to inform and
provide you with ways to help protect your personal information. We have additional security to our Online Banking site; this security is called Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
What is MFA?
MFA, Multi-Factor Authentication, is a security system that adds an extra
layer of protection to your online accounts. This form of protection lets you
know you’re truly at our actual website, not a fake one to look like ours. And,
it lets us know that it is really you accessing your GECU accounts, not someone
else.
How does MFA Work?
When you visit a GECU branch office, you know our faces and we know yours.
Our new security feature does the same thing over the Internet. There are
different types of MFAs available. The one we have chosen is very simple and
easy to use. When you enroll, you will receive a secret image and create a
phrase known only to you. Whenever you login to your Online Banking account, the
system will display this image and phrase so you can feel confident you are
accessing our legitimate Online Banking site, not a fake one. Please note:
Never enter your password without seeing your personal image and phrase.
The security system also checks the computer you’re using to access your Online
Banking account. Typically, you’ll access your account from one or two
computers, such as from work or home. You can choose to register both computers
so the system remembers your computer(s). If you login from a computer that has
not been registered, the system will take additional steps to verify your
identity, such as asking you to provide the answer to your own personalized
security questions or asking you to enter a one-time password that would be sent
to your email address.
Why did we add this extra layer of security?
As we see increasing cases of identity theft and phishing crimes, it’s important
we do our best to provide you with the most updated information and services to
help protect your personal information. Identity theft only takes a second to
happen, but it can take a long time to recover.
