How it started

The Robert A. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship was created in 1998 to honor the memory of Robert A. Cunningham, who volunteered as a GECU board member for 30 years. He sat on the supervisory committee for 10 years and served three terms (nine years) as a Chairperson of the Board. This college scholarship honors five-graduating high-school seniors who share the same spirit of volunteerism and scholastic achievement as Mr. Cunningham.

This year, we added the Robert A. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship for GECU Official Family. This scholarship follows the same guidelines as the Robert A. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship and is awarded as a separate scholarship to students of GECU’s Official Family who exemplify the spirit of volunteerism. Two recipients are awarded a one-time, $2,000 scholarship as they head off to further their studies through higher education.

Interested in applying for our scholarship? The application period will begin in January and end in early March, 2025. Mark your calendars and watch for more information starting in December 2024.

To prepare and know if you’ll qualify, the scholarship candidate qualifications include:1

  • Being a college-bound, graduating high school senior.
  • Having a strong academic record with at least a “B” average.
  • Being a GECU member with an account in their name.
  • Having a passion for volunteering through demonstrating the spirit of volunteerism.

The 2024 scholarship recipients have been chosen. Congratulations to those who have been awarded due to their exceptional qualifications.

"Being involved with our scholarship program for a long time, I was thrilled to learn about the new offering for team members. The Robert A. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship will help to make Nathan's first year at Chatham University as a collegiate athlete financially easier. The scholarship process was an overall great experience, and the committee was outstanding. We are so appreciative of this award and recognition to help Nathan fund his future goals."

"Our family is extremely excited for the next chapter in our daughter’s life. In the fall of 2024, Teya will be attending Wright State University in Dayton, OH studying nursing. Teya’s commitment marks an opportunity in her life to continue caring for others in time of need. We like to thank General Electric Credit Union for extending the Robert A. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship to team members. With GECU's generosity and support, Teya will continue the efforts to support others in volunteerism."
