"People Helping People"

At GECU, we're dedicated to the Credit Union philosophy of "people helping people" every day by helping members and serving our communities. We enjoy helping local schools, charities, and organizations through volunteer opportunities and other support efforts.

GECU Cares: 2019 Projects

Our team member volunteer program, GECU Cares, was created this year to centralize and organize volunteer initiatives across the Credit Union. Here are just a few of the projects our team has donated their time, energy, and talents to this year:

  • SOUPer Bowl, January 27 – February 13
GECU team members, members, and community partners came together and collected nearly 500 cans of soup for NEST Community Learning Center in Loveland, OH. NEST travels to low-income areas throughout our community with its After-School Homework and Tutoring Programs, which address academic barriers for each child through free help offered in a mobile learning center.
  • National Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 18 – 22
We participated by inviting members and team members to suggest and vote on ways for us to surprise folks in our community with random acts of kindness throughout the week.

Read this touching story, submitted by our team member, Joyce:
In her submission, Joyce shared, “Mary is one of those members who amazes me. She is on her third bout with cancer and undergoing treatment, usually traveling and enduring the nausea by herself. She makes light of her situation, but she’s someone a random act of kindness would truly touch.” We brought Mary into the branch, surprised her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and gave her a gift card to Jungle Jim’s so she could do her shopping on us!
  • Fairfield 5K, March 23
We participated in and sponsored this year's event to support the Fairfield Food Pantry, an organization that has served local residents since 1997 with the mission of fighting hunger in Fairfield.
  • March Madness Fundraiser, March 22 – April 5
Throughout March Madness, GECU team members supported their favorite team while fundraising for the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative’s Saturday Hoops program. This program supports inner-city kids by providing them with mentors and a safe place to participate in activities like basketball and arts and crafts.
  • Habitat for Humanity: Rock the Block, April 13
Our group worked hard in April at the Rock the Block event in the Five Points neighborhood of Fairfield, OH., helping clean-up efforts alongside Habitat for Humanity!
  • Keep Cincinnati Beautiful: Greener Goals with FC Cincinnati, April 15
We enjoyed volunteering with FC Cincinnati and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful to clean up a local playground in the West End!
  • National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6 – 10
In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, we partnered with Cincinnati Public Schools and surprised a few teachers in our community with school supplies!
  • Girls on the Run 5K, May 11
We partnered with Girls on the Run of Cincinnati to help kids decorate tiaras to wear during their Spring 5K!
  • Ohio River Sweep, June 15
Our Giveback Crew spent the morning on the banks of the Ohio River in Newport, KY with The WAVE Foundation to clean and beautify the area!

We were proud to sponsor and participate in the Hike for Hospice, and support and organization that has helped families create the best possible end-of-life experience for 40 years.
  • Honor Flight, September 24
Our Giveback Crew had the honor of being part of a Welcome Home Rally with Honor Flight, where we helped welcome our heroes home after their trip to D.C. to visit the war memorials free of charge.
  • WASTEd and the City, October 1

Annual Initiatives

  • "Red, White, and Blue Jeans" for Honor Flight
For the last several years, our team members have been allowed to wear jeans around the July 4th Holiday, and funds raised to participate in the event are donated to the Honor Flight.
  • United Way
We are annual contributors to the United Way campaign and year-after-year, the GECU team reaches its goals in supporting United Way and their efforts to help those in need within our community. And, with a little over $.90 of every dollar going to local organizations that help our community, we continue to give generously to this wonderful cause.
  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Costumed for a Cure"
This event, held every Halloween, has been a tradition of GECU for many years. GECU employees participate in "Costumed for a Cure" by dressing up in their favorite Halloween costume for the workday. All donations to participate in the event are donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
  • Giving Tree for Lighthouse Youth & Family Services
This year, we partnered with Lighthouse Youth & Family Services to provide gifts for local children, teenagers, and young adults struggling to make ends meet during the holiday season. Team members will collect winter clothing, hygiene products, and other wish list items to help spread holiday cheer.

Please Note: As a Credit Union, we’re committed to giving back to the communities we serve. All donation and sponsorship requests can be sent to: Please ensure to allow at least a 6-8 week lead time on all requests as our group meets monthly to review the opportunities shared with us. Thank you!

Cunningham Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 1998 to honor the memory of Robert A. Cunningham, who volunteered as a GECU board member for 30 years, having sat on the supervisory committee for 10 years and served 3 terms as Chairperson of the Board. He helped mold this credit union into what it is today. Robert's love of children's sports and his commitment to scholastic achievement and collegiate education, inspired us to offer this annual scholarship to graduating, college-bound, high school seniors who share the same spirit of volunteerism.

Over the past 22 years, we have awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships. To qualify, applicants need to be: a primary member of GECU, a college-bound high school senior with a strong academic record and involved in volunteer activities. The deadline for the scholarship application is typically in mid-January; applications are available at the credit union and on our Current Promotions page starting in October. The five recipients of the scholarship are notified in early spring and are highlighted in the April edition of our Bright Horizons newsletter. Click here for this year's application.
