Take control of your debit card.

No need to worry about where you misplaced your GECU debit card or what you purchased from a foreign country. With the click of a button, we’ve got you covered.

What can I do with Card Controls?

  • Turn your GECU debit card On/Off: Instantly turn your GECU debit card off for peace of mind or to prevent unauthorized transactions. When your card is turned Off, it cannot be used to make purchases or ATM withdrawals. This is a great option if the debit card has been misplaced, stolen, or simply when not being used.
  • Set spend limits: Prevent charges over a specified dollar amount. This is perfect if your are trying to reign in spending or have children with a debit card on your account.
  • Block international transactions: Limit your debit card to U.S. purchases only and instantly lift those restrictions when traveling or shopping abroad.
  • Customize allowable merchant types: Want to use your debit card at certain merchants, but not others? Simply set your controls to Off for merchant types such as: gas stations, grocery stores, department stores, restaurants, entertainment, and more.
  • Customize allowable transaction types: Never make online purchases with your debit card? With card controls, you can disable certain transactions types, such as payments made online or by phone.
  • Set alerts: Customize alerts for real-time notifications about debit card activity. Alerts can be sent via: push notification, email, or text message.

Access and manage your Card Controls settings via Online Banking and our mobile app.

Within Online Banking:

  • Hover over Additional Services and select Card Controls.

In Our Mobile App:

  • Apple® Users: Tap More at the bottom of the screen and select Card Controls.
  • Android™ Users: Tap the Menu icon at the top of the screen and select Card Controls.

How do I get started using Card Controls?
Set up Card Controls preferences by logging in to Online Banking or our mobile app. Card Controls can be found under the Additional Services tab in Online Banking or from the More menu in the mobile app.
How do I turn my GECU debit card On/Off?
From the main screen in Card Controls, tap on the toggle switch to turn your debit card ON or OFF. You will receive a confirmation message once your card has been turned off or back on again. Note: This will not decline any scheduled, recurring payments you have setup.
How quickly does the On/Off status, and other limits on my card take effect?
The changes made in Card Controls are effective instantly!
Can I manage Card Controls on more than one debit card?
Yes! From the main Card Controls screen, select the debit card from a list of cards available for your GECU account.
If I turn my debit card off, will my recurring transactions be blocked?
No, your recurring transactions will not be blocked. They will continue to be processed even when your card is turned off.
How do I customize my debit card alerts and specify alert types?
Through Online Banking or the mobile app, you can set preferences by: Merchant Type, Transaction Type, and Spend Limits. From there, you can specify if you would like an alert or would like to decline transactions from various categories of merchants, transactions, or dollar amounts. You may also restrict your card from international use under Location Type.
  • Online Banking: From the main screen, hover over Additional Services, click on Card Controls, and click the Set Declines and Alerts button.
  • Mobile App: From the main screen, tap on Set Declines and Alerts.
Can I block only certain types of merchants?
Yes! Through Online Banking and the mobile app, you can set blocks for specific spending categories such as: restaurants, travel, grocery, and other types of merchants.
  • Online Banking: From the main screen, hover over Additional Services, click on Card Controls, and click the Set Declines and Alerts button, then select Merchant Type.
  • Mobile App: Select the Set Declines and Alerts button, then select Merchant Type.
Can I block only certain types of transactions?
Yes! Through Online Banking and the mobile app, you can set blocks for specific spending categories such as: ATM, online, mail/phone order, and other types of transactions.
  • Online Banking: From the main screen, hover over Additional Services, click on Card Controls, and click the Set Declines and Alerts button, then select Transaction Type.
  • Mobile App: Select the Set Declines and Alerts button, then select Transaction Type.
Can I set spending limits?
Yes! Through Online Banking and our mobile app, you can set to decline or alert you for transactions over specified amounts.
  • Online Banking: From the main screen, hover over Additional Services, click on Card Controls, and click the Set Declines and Alerts button, then select Spend Limits.
  • Mobile App: Select the Set Declines and Alerts button, then select Spend Limits.
Where do I specify whether to receive alerts by: email, text, and/or push notification?
  • Online Banking: From the main screen, hover over Additional Services, click on Card Controls, and click the Alert Delivery Options. From there you can use the toggle to have the alerts turned on or off.
  • Mobile App: From the main Card Controls screen, select Alert Delivery Options. From there you can use the toggle to have the alerts turned on or off.
How quickly will I receive alerts?
During a transaction, you will instantly receive alerts via: email, text, and/or push notification.
Can I use Card Controls to notify GECU about my travel plans?
No, travel notifications cannot be submitted via Card Controls at this time. Please complete the Travel Notification Form before you travel, so your travel debit card activity is not potentially flagged as fraud.
How do I turn off debit card alerts?
In Card Controls, turn off each alert in the individual menus for: Merchant Type, Transaction Type, Location Type, and Spend Limits.
Is there a fee to use Card Controls?
No, this service is completely free! If you choose to receive text alerts through Card Controls, your carrier’s messaging and data rates may apply.
I don’t have an Online Banking or Mobile Banking account. How do I use Card Controls?
You must enroll in Online Banking or download our mobile app to use Card Controls.
I opened a GECU checking account and requested a debit card. When will I be able to set up Card Controls?
Once you open a GECU checking account with a debit card, you will be able to start setting up Card Controls within one (1) calendar day from the time of account opening.
Can I register my GECU credit card for Card Controls?
At this time, Card Controls is available only for your GECU debit card. We are currently working to add this service to GECU credit cards and anticipate it to become available soon.
