5 Ways to Celebrate the International Day of Happiness
By: The GECU Cares Team
The International Day of Happiness is a global event promoted this year on Monday, March 20th. The United Nations (UN) has celebrated the International Day of Happiness since 2013 to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world; this day serves as an important reminder that being happy is a human right worth celebrating. The UN nonprofit group, Action for Happiness, represents over 160 countries, with the objective to increase awareness around well-being and human happiness. How can you spread happiness, joy, and kindness, while also engaging in self-care? Here are a few suggestions and actions you can take throughout the day.
Celebrate International Day of Happiness
1. Surround yourself with positivity
One of the best ways to be happy is to surround yourself with positivity. Studies have found that improving the mood of others around you may be as simple as improving your own mood. Positivity is contagious. In fact, researchers have discovered that positive and funny posts are shared far more than negative ones.
2. Create a joy list
What makes you happy? Take time to make a list of things that bring you joy, even if they’re unconventional. Whether it’s drinking fresh brewed coffee or listening to music during your commute to work, it’s important to savor these moments and experiences. Often, it’s the little things that bring you happiness.
3. Spend time in nature
There is beauty all around us! Get outside – spend time in nature to appreciate the calm, serenity, and quiet. You will find mother nature is a silent teacher and often reduces anxiety. Enjoy the sunshine and breathe in the fresh air. Go for a walk or sit outside during lunch or a coffee break.
4. Do something kind
Bake cookies for a coworker, pay for the meal of the person behind you in a drive-thru, or give a heartfelt compliment. It is scientifically proven that anything you do to bring joy to someone else boosts your own serotonin levels, too, making you happier!
5. Use happiness strategies
There are many ways to boost your happiness. Whether you are meditating, following an exercise routine, writing in a gratitude journal, or treating yourself to something you’ve been wanting, these strategies will increase your mood. In addition, learning something new is linked to a sense of achievement and overall well-being.
6. Give a smile; get a smile
Several studies indicate something as simple as smiling can improve your mood, reduce stress, and increase happiness. Smiles are free and others are likely to return the smile. These reactions lead to even more smiles, creating a cycle of positivity.
Using these tips and practicing self-care can brighten your outlook on life. Take a moment to celebrate the International Day of Happiness and appreciate all the good things in life. For more resources, visit: Action for Happiness.
