Building Blocks for Kids: A Cincinnati-Based Nonprofit

Founded in 2003, Building Blocks for Kids (BB4K) is a Greater Cincinnati-based nonprofit devoted to transforming the lives of children with physical, emotional, and developmental challenges.

For Executive Director Dynette Clark, it started as a passion project to help a friend whose child had several challenges in their first few years of life and then needed special therapy at the age of three.

“It was very cost-prohibitive for her family,” says Clark. “We couldn’t find help anywhere else, so I put together an event, kind of like a gala, and we raised about half of the money that they needed, around $12,000 in that first year.”
She would continue fundraising efforts and eventually launch BB4K. Since then, they’ve helped over 1,000 children and their families with more than $2 million in support.

Their acronym, THRIVE, encompasses how they help families in the community and serves as a reminder that every child deserves a chance to thrive. It stands for: therapy, home improvements and modifications, resources, inclusive education, vibrant events, and equipment.

Today, they put on several events outside of their annual fundraiser. The Bubble Blast 4k in August brings together both those they serve and donors; their Dance with My Daddy event is held for fathers and daughters, or any child with special needs; and their Fall Fun 4 Everyone event at Neiderman Farm brings together the whole disability community, young and old.

“[General Electric Credit Union] has become a community partner with us. They come to our events...We really feel like we’re part of the team,” says Director of Operations Jenny Ensley.

As a nonprofit organization, their positive experience with the Credit Union goes beyond support from their Business Services banker Kyle Musgrove. They lean on our Simply Free Business Checking Account for no monthly fees and free cash deposits up to $10,000 per month,1 and our Business Advantage Money Market account to grow their balance with a great savings rate.

“The amount of [interest] we make back in a year easily helps another child each and every year,” says Clark.
