Apex Cabinetry: 28 Years of Supplying High-Quality, B2B Cabinetry

David Martin started Apex Cabinetry in 1997. Back then, it was just him and a table saw. “I liked the woodshop in high school and went to Live Oaks for the cabinet-making program,” says Martin. “I enjoyed it, it came easily to me. It didn’t seem like work—it just seemed like a hobby. So, I made a hobby a job.”
After taking the plunge and starting his own business, he experienced continuous growth, building his team and purchasing equipment like a computer numerical control (CNC) machine and an edge bander. Today, Apex Cabinetry has 30 employees and supplies Tri-State contractors with the high-quality cabinets they need to outfit coffee shops, doctor's offices, and more.

Despite the business’ success, Martin struggled to find the right banking partner early on. After a large financial institution told him he needed to find a different place to bank, he moved his accounts to a smaller institution. The experience left him underwhelmed, and his father suggested looking into General Electric Credit Union (GECU), where he himself had personal accounts.

“I reluctantly told him that the last time I looked, [GECU] didn’t have business offerings,” says Martin. “But I called just to appease him, and I was astonished by how beneficial they would be for us.”
Martin relies on GECU business banking for more than just expert guidance and local support—he actively uses our digital solutions to streamline his operations. He makes ACH electronic payments instead of mailing checks, reducing the risk of fraud and ensuring faster transactions with his vendors. This helps him build stronger business relationships and secure better terms. He also takes advantage of the Business RDC App,1 which allows him to deposit checks electronically without needing to visit a branch.

When it comes to business bank accounts, GECU has helped businesses like Apex Cabinetry reduce fees with our Simply Free Business Checking Account, optimize their savings through our Business Advantage Money Market Account, and simplify pay roll with Zero Balance Sweep.

GECU is committed to supporting small businesses and recognizes the essential role they play in the local economy. They, like GECU, truly care about people—a sentiment shared by Martin as he reflects on the best part of being a business owner.

“The most rewarding thing about owning Apex Cabinetry is the people I work with. We all work together as a family. We all support each other. And we pick each other up when we need to,” says Martin.
