Mobile Deposit FAQs

Mobile deposit is a convenient way to deposit checks from your smart phone, saving you time and reducing trips to the branch or ATM.

It works by using the camera on your phone to capture an image of the check. The image is processed the same way as making a deposit at a branch or at an ATM. Check images are not stored directly on your phone (they won’t appear in your phone’s photo album), for your security and protection.

As long as you are a GECU member in good standing and have agreed to the GECU Online and Mobile Banking Agreement and other conditions as outlined in the Mobile deposit terms and conditions (available within Online and Mobile Banking), you are eligible to use Mobile deposit. Overdrafts and returned deposit items may affect eligibility.

GECU does not charge a fee to use Mobile deposit. If this policy changes, we will provide notice 30 days in advance. GECU is not liable for any costs you may incur from cellular data networks or other related equipment that may result from usage of Mobile deposit.

Mobile deposit is found within the GECU Mobile Banking app. Visit your app store, search for General Electric Credit Union, and look for our logo to download our app.

Ensure all payees have endorsed the check(s), and also include the words For GECU Mobile Deposit Only on the back of the check(s).

Most GECU deposit accounts are eligible; these include: checking, savings, and money market accounts.

Generally, eligible checks include checks in their original form, payable directly to you, in U.S. dollars and drawn against a U.S. financial institution. You can only deposit checks using Mobile deposit; however, there are some checks that you cannot deposit. These include:

  • Any check that has already been deposited via Mobile deposit.
  • Checks payable to any person or entity other than you.
  • Travelers checks, money orders, or savings bonds.
  • Checks containing any alteration of which you know or believe to be fraudulent or not authorized by the owner of the account on which the check is drawn.
  • Checks payable jointly, unless deposited into an account in the name of all payees.
  • Any checks that are not in original form with a signature, such as substitute checks or remotely created checks (as defined by Federal Reserve Board Regulation CC (Reg. CC)).
  • Any item that is stamped with a “non-negotiable” watermark.
  • Checks written off an account at a financial institution located outside of the United States.
  • Checks not payable in United States currency.
  • Checks dated more than six (6) months prior to the date of deposit or deemed “VOID” on the date of deposit.
  • Checks or items prohibited by the Credit Union.
  • Checks with any endorsement on the back other than that specified in this Agreement.
  • Checks that have already been deposited or that are in the process of being deposited, nor will you attempt to redeposit or negotiate those checks with any other party.
  • Checks that have previously submitted through Mobile deposit or through a remote deposit service offered at any other financial institution.
  • Checks on which a stop payment order has been issued or for which there are insufficient funds.
  • Checks that otherwise violate this Agreement.

You should retain the check in a secure location for no less than 45 days and then, after confirming the deposited funds have been applied to your account correctly, destroy the check. Destroying the check prevents it from being presented for deposit at another time.

Deposits made through Mobile Deposit must be received by us no later than 3:00 PM ET on any business day to be considered deposited on that day. Deposits we receive after that time, or on a weekend or Federal holiday, will be considered deposited on the next business day. Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.

Our Funds Availability Policy, as well as the funds availability requirements of Reg. CC, do not apply when you deposit checks through Mobile deposit. Generally, all funds from items deposited through the Mobile deposit feature will be placed on a two-business day hold. However, we may apply additional delays on the availability of funds based on any other factors as determined by us, in our sole discretion.

Yes. Once logged in to the Mobile Banking app, click Check Deposit then History. Deposit history is available for 180 days. In addition, you can view real-time check statuses, deposit information, and the front and back of check images. Your check images are not stored directly on your phone, for your security and protection.

Tips for ensuring the best check image possible include:

  • Flatten folded or crumpled checks before taking your photos.
  • Keep the check within the view finder on the camera screen when capturing your photos.
    • Try not to get too much of the area surrounding the check.
  • Take photos of your check in a well-lit area.
  • Place the check on a solid, dark background before taking the photo.
  • Keep your phone flat and steady above the check when taking your photos.
  • Hold the camera as square to the check as possible, to reduce corner-to-corner skew.
  • Make sure that the entire check image is visible and in focus before submitting your deposit.
  • Make sure there are no shadows across the check, all four corners are visible, the check image is not blurry, and the MICR line (numbers on the bottom of your check) is readable.
  • In addition, make sure the amount you enter matches the amount on the check, remember to sign the back of the check, and endorse For GECU Mobile Deposit Only.
